La Brigada de la Basura
Saturday, June 19th 2010, was the inauguration of Que?Pasa's sponsorship of a weekly neighborhood clean-up by local children. We are calling them
La Brigada de la Basura - The Trash Brigade
Every Saturday at 11:30am the neighborhood children are invited to meet at Que?Pasa. We give them a trash bag and latex gloves; then with adult supervision we walk through the local streets picking up every piece of trash we can find on the streets and sidewalks. We plan our route to end up back at Que?Pasa where the children are rewarded with grilled Hot-Dogs, chips, soft drinks, a child oriented movie, a small bag of sweets and a small toy.
The turn-out for the first Saturday was better than we expected - 17 kids. Today we are averaging 60-70 kids every week. We started off small - concentrating on only a two block radius from Que?Pasa. Currently we have doubled our clean-up area and switch between the streets and the river shores every week. As attendance increases we hope to expand that radius as well.
If you would like to help us, there are various things possible. We always need more adult supervisors - spanish language skills are helpful but not neccessary. Toy donations would help and we won't refuse cash to help purchasing gloves, bags, Hot-Dogs and chips.
Eventually we hope to get enough support that we can purchase permanent trash receptacles for the barrio. Also any mass media contributions in Spanish about ecology would be greatly appreciated.
Just come on by on any Saturday morning and meet the wonderful children of La Brigada de la Basura. We would all love to see you!
